Nursery Pivot and Closet Update

Final room design

Week 2 of the One Room Challenge is upon us and I’ve been getting. stuff. done. (Or at least as much as my 6-month-pregnant body will allow!

My mind has been on overdrive recently, and as a result, I’ve been revising my original nursery design plan and truly diving into exactly how I envision each piece functioning.

First, a pivot in design

As I mentioned last week, I was working with a Havenly designer to put together some designs. But something hasn’t been feeling quite right with what I’ve been seeing from our designer so far. Call it a gut feeling, call it some weird maternal-perfectionist-nesting phenomenon…whatever we want to call it, I haven’t been happy with the designs.

The design concepts felt a bit flat to me. And I don’t have the time to have further back-and-forth conversations with the designer, especially as time continues to slip by.

Don’t get me wrong, the Havenly designer was lovely. But given the reality of what’s going on in the world with all the supply chain issues AND how soon Baby will be arriving, I need to just get to making decisions and ordering asap! On top of that, it’s made me realize that I should be more confident in my own design skills. I know what I want, I just need to make it happen!

Rethinking the meaning behind each piece

So I spent some time this week really rethinking how every single thing we put in this nursery will work for us. And as a result, I have a revised plan for the nursery and I’m really excited about it!

The rug

It all started with the rug. To be honest, I have a smaller version of this exact rug in my office. It was one that I picked up on a whim at Marshall’s one day, and it just makes me happy. I figure why not get the larger version for the nursery, since none of the options presented to me felt quite right. I’d like a rug to help anchor the room, amplify the theme of the nursery, and besides, it might help protect the carpet from inevitable kid messes!

The daybed

From there, the next important thing has been the daybed. We felt a daybed was a good call for a few reasons. First, by turning this guest room into a nursery, we’re giving up a queen bed for guests, so by having a daybed in the room, we’ll still have the flexibility of an extra bed if we have extra guests at once. Secondly, the idea of a daybed seems like a great spot for the baby to play, read, and hang out. We can style it as a couch by day with comfy pillows, use it as a spot for reading books and playing. Thirdly, it will provide a long-term bed solution. For now, it may be my bed some nights, as I’m a notoriously bad sleeper…but also, if we purchase a quality bed now, it will transition into the baby’s bed when she’s older.

In really thinking about how this piece will function, it’s clear that it needs to be upholstered with soft, inviting material to fit the nursery. I also think it will be helpful for this to not have a back so that it can function as a real bed in the future. I want the daybed to be high quality so it can be used for years to come.

The crib

Deciding on the crib was directly influenced by the daybed decision. While we need a crib that is safe for our baby, we also don’t need to spend a ton of money on something that will only be used for a couple of years. It’s a slippery slope with cribs, especially when you factor in conversion kits…the prices can skyrocket rather quickly! Since the daybed will be a multifunctional piece, we’ll aim to invest more on that.

Dresser

The other place we’re aiming to invest in is the dresser. I’ve purchased my fair share of Ikea dressers over the years that haven’t really stood the test of time, and I vow to not do that again. I ended up falling in love with the look of this dresser. Don’t the handles come together to look like little smiley faces? Or is that just me?! In the spirit of multifunctional pieces, I want this dresser to be large enough to serve as a changing table for now, plus I’d like it to be a part of her bedroom set for years to come. There’s a chance that this might even fit in the closet.

Glider

There will probably be a lot of quality time spent rocking the baby, so we want a glider to be comfortable. I’d like it to be neutral, quiet, and something that won’t break the bank. We found one that we liked, but it’s now out of stock. We figure that we might need to be flexible on this piece.

closet cleaned out

Closet cleanout complete!

The other major thing I accomplished this week? I cleaned out the closet! It feels good to have a clean slate! Closet planning will be coming along soon…I’ve been following Lauren from Farmhouseish as she’s transformed her closet for her baby-to-be…it’s gotten me quite excited to make this closet into something special, yet simple, for Baby!

We are out of town this week, so I’m hoping to get a jump on ordering pieces and making plans for the DIY portion of this transformation! I’ll share links as I go. I’m sure the plan will change slightly over time, but I’m excited about the newfound clarity! Here we go!
