One Room Challenge | Week 1 | Intentions for a Minimal Entryway

One Room Challenge

Here I am, ready for my first One Room Challenge!

For those who aren’t aware, the One Room Challenge (ORC) is a way for creators to share the process of transforming one room, and finishing said room within six weeks. It’s all about the process. And finishing. And the community. And did I mention finishing a single project in just six weeks!?

For me, this is key — when it comes to my home decor projects, I love to take my sweet, sweet time. I obsess over the details, and sometimes overdo the research, only to hurry through parts here and there…and before I know it, weeks and weeks have passed, and my dear husband begins to sweetly wonder aloud what I’ve been up to. (He really is the sweetest for putting up with all my projects, by the way!)

But hey, good news, babe: this is a time-boxed, room-boxed challenge! And there is no challenge, per se! It’s just me and a whole load of similarly-minded awesome creatives ready to share and support each other through this process!

So, let’s get to the spot I’m looking to finish, shall we? May I present our front door entryway:

A blank wall, full of possibility!

A blank wall, full of possibility!

Last year, we designed our new home with an open-concept layout, which we love. And in normal places, a lack of an entryway in said open-concept might be fine. However, we live in a place where it’s WINTER for approximately 8 months a year. And in WINTER, it’s nice to have a spot to drop winter apparel upon entering our home. I noticed this quickly when we had a holiday party last year during an epic snowstorm. People felt a tiny bit awkward upon entering our home because there was no obvious place for them to kick off their wet boots and hang their snow-glazed jackets. (For the record, we do have a mudroom, but that located through the other door.)

Flashback to last year: the jacket and boots that need a place in the new entryway!

And since I hope to one day fill my home with friends and family again when this pandemic is over, I say let’s design an entryway that is minimal, useful, and welcoming…and not just a blank wall!

Also…we really can’t forget the fact here that there is a pandemic going on, and I also work a full-time job, and would love to keep my sweet husband happy here by maintaining a low-stress lifestyle throughout this all. Not to mention the fact that this is my very first ORC! So, I've made a promise to myself to not bite off more than I can chew. I aim to keep things small and manageable, and look forward to celebrating this new space in our home when all is said and done!

Want a quick sneak peek of what I’m playing around with? Here’s where I am at the moment…visualizing ideas with stuff I already have on hand in my home: two bedside tables borrowed from an extra bedroom, a repurposed (and half-done) DIY piece of art, and a finishing fall touch of dried grass in an adorable little pot, just for fun. OH, and that janky picture of a lamp over the top there? That’s just a printed out idea of what I might go for with lighting. I’m so visual. But whatever works, right?!

And please don’t miss the blue painter’s tape, to further help me visualize the size of a few pieces I plan on possibly ordering!

I’ve started a mood board to help guide me. I’m trying to keep things minimal and am working to add in some pops of copper and brown to help warm things up. It’s also a way for me to step out of my black/white/gray comfort zone!

Trust me, LOTS will change before all is finished around here! Join me every Wednesday as I make my vision a reality on how to better welcome people into my home with a beautifully designed entryway.

See you again next week!
